Arteta Responds to Neville’s Critique of Arsenal’s VAR Statement

Mikel Arteta has addressed the media in anticipation of Arsenal’s impending Champions League clash against Sevilla. Arteta came under the spotlight this week due to his vehement reaction following Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

The Arsenal manager expressed his discontent with the decision to award Newcastle’s goal, citing two key reasons. Firstly, he believed the ball had crossed the line before Joe Willock delivered the cross. Secondly, he claimed that Gunners defender Gabriel Magalhaes was fouled by Newcastle’s Joelinton, who had both hands on Magalhaes’ back.

In response to Arteta’s impassioned remarks, Arsenal issued a statement in support of their manager’s comments. As Arteta addressed the press before the forthcoming Champions League match against Sevilla, he elucidated the rationale behind his vocal stance.

Arteta stated, “My primary duty is to ardently defend the interests of my players and the reputation of my club in the most effective manner possible. This is my steadfast commitment, and I shall consistently shoulder the responsibility for it. It’s an intrinsic part of my character to safeguard the honor of my club.”

When questioned about the response to the club’s statement, particularly the criticism from former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, who labeled it as ‘dangerous,’ Arteta responded, “Once again, our obligation is to articulate our sentiments based on the available evidence and our club’s historical context.”

In a televised commentary on Sky Sports, Neville opined, “I found Arsenal’s statement to be rather deficient. Just the day after Liverpool issued a statement highlighting ‘sporting integrity’ and exploring all potential avenues, including a replay.”

He further elaborated, “I found it to be somewhat precarious, and in my view, Arsenal’s statement carries a degree of risk as well.”
