Scaloni’s Updates: Messi Relationship & 2023 Copa America Role

Last month, Lionel Scaloni, the manager of Argentina’s national team, hinted at departing from his role. However, following the Copa America draw, he has provided an update regarding his position.

Responding to claims of discontent directed at the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner due to his recent conduct in Brazil, Scaloni acknowledged addressing his future with Lionel Messi. Reports from The Athletic suggested Messi’s actions might have influenced Scaloni’s remarks during a post-match press conference, indicating agitation within Scaloni’s coaching staff as Messi had not contacted them.

Speaking ahead of the Copa America 2024 group stage draw, Scaloni emphasized his ongoing contemplation about his decision. He expressed the need to assess whether to continue, restart, or pursue an alternative path, emphasizing the importance of providing the national team with a coach brimming with enthusiasm and energy, meeting the players’ high standards.

Highlighting his amicable relationship with President Tapia, Scaloni stressed the need to prioritize the team’s best interests. He confirmed conversations with Messi, acknowledging the captain’s significance and expressing a positive rapport with both Messi and Tapia.

Scaloni assumed the Argentina managerial role following Jorge Sampaoli’s dismissal after the team’s exit in the 2018 World Cup’s Round of 16. Subsequently, after their third-place finish in the 2019 Copa America, Scaloni was appointed as the full-time coach.

While confirmed for the upcoming Copa America in the United States, Scaloni’s tenure beyond that remains uncertain, with his future prospects yet to be determined.
